Rock and Metal History, a day like today April 25


1965: During a North American tour, The Rolling Stones appeared at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto to over 16,000 fans.

1973: Sweet received their first Gold single in the United States for their hit Little Willy

1977: Led Zeppelin performed at the Kentucky Fair And Exposition Center, in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.

1978: We Are the Champions from Queen was certified Platinum after reaching #2 on the UK Singles Chart and #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.

1979: The Ramones' movie Rock 'n' Roll High School opened.

The Police made their public debut on the Top of the Pops show on BBC-TV, playing "Roxanne".


Heaven and Hell

1980: Black Sabbath released their 9th studio album, Heaven and Hell. This was the first Black Sabbath studio album with the great Ronnie James Dio as vocalist. Ronnie James Dio replaced Ozzy Osbourne the previous year.

1981: Hi Infidelity remained at #1 on the Album chart for REO Speedwagon, with Styx's Paradise Theater

1985: Queen played the first of four nights at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in Australia.

1987: U2 replace Beastie Boys at top of US LP chart with The Joshua Tree. U2 started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with their fifth studio album Joshua Tree. Inspired by American tour experiences, literature, and politics, the album topped the charts in over 20 countries, and is one of the world's all-time best-selling albums, with over 25 million copies sold.

1990: Jimi Hendrix's Fender Stratocaster that the guitarist famously used to play "The Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock was auctioned off for $295,000.

1992: Eric Clapton had the #1 Adult Contemporary song for the second week in a row with "Tears In Heaven".

Adrenalize by Def Leppard remained at #1 on the Album chart. Bruce Springsteen's album Human Touch was #2

1994: The Eagles played the first of four concerts at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California on their Hell Freezes Over tour. Back together for the first time in 14 years, the group named the album after an earlier quote from Don Henley, who responded to the question "When would the Eagles get back together?".

1997: U2's 'Pop Mart' world tour kicked off at The Las Vegas San Boyd Stadium in front of 35,000 fans. The tour featured the largest video screen in the world and would visit 80 cities around the planet.

2005: Bruce Springsteen played the opening show on his Devils & Dust Tour North American Tour at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan.
