Rock and metal History, a day like today May 11
1963: The Beatles started a 30 week run at No.1 on the UK album charts with their debut album 'Please Please Me', making it the longest running No.1 album by a group ever. The bands follow up 'With The Beatles' replaced it at the top of the charts on 7th December 1963 and stayed there for 21 weeks.
1964: During a UK tour The Rolling Stones were refused lunch at The Grand Hotel, Bristol, where they were staying because they were not wearing jackets and ties. The following day the Daily Express ran the story with the headline, 'The Rolling Stones gather no lunch.'
1970: The triple soundtrack album Woodstock was released in the US, going gold within two weeks. The album featured tracks by; Canned Heat, Richie Havens, Country Joe McDonald, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Santana and others. The couple on the album cover are Bobbi Kelly and Nick Ercoline.
It was the end of an era, one of the most amazing times not just in rock but in music history, as the Beatles released the final single of their time together--"The Long And Winding Road"
1972: John Lennon appeared on the US television 'Dick Cavett Show', claiming he was under surveillance from the FBI.
1974: Led Zeppelin met Elvis Presley after a Presley concert at the Los Angeles Forum.
1977: Iggy Pop releases ‘The Idiot’ and it hits #30 in the UK and #32 in the US. The album is produced by David Bowie.
1978: Queen concluded their News of the World tour with three sold-out shows at Wembley Arena in London.
1982: IRON MAIDEN began their North American leg of their tour in support of their third studio album: The Number of the Beast. This concert took place at the IMA Auditorium in Flint, Michigan, opening for Rainbow. During The Beast On The Road tour, IRON MAIDEN also opened for 38 Special, Scorpions and Judas Priest.
1985: Bruce Springsteen and a small group of friends went out for a boy’s night out in Lake Oswego, Oregon, two nights before his wedding to Julianne Phillips. Drinking in the Gemini pub Springsteen sang a number of songs, karaoke-style, to his own records in the jukebox.
1987: The UK indie chart had The Smiths at No.1 on with 'Sheila Take A Bow', No.2, The Cult, 'Lil' Devil' No.3, The Pogues, 'The Irish Rover. The CD chart, David Bowie No.1 'Never Let Me Down', 'Raindancing' Alison Moyet at No.2 and Genesis 'Invisible Touch' at No.3.
1989: Accept release Eat the heart.It was recorded at Dierks-Studios, in Cologne, from September 1988 to January 1989. Although Jim Stacey is presented as rhythm guitar player in the album line-up, the album credits also state that all guitar work on the album was played by Wolf Hoffmann. Jim Stacey did perform second guitar live with the band.Until 2010's Blood of the Nations, this was Accept's only album without Udo Dirkschneider as lead vocalist. U.D.O. contributes with crowd vocals on "Turn the Wheel". U.D.O. has also covered the song "X-T-C" on the 2001 compilation A Tribute to Accept II. Accept later recorded "Generation Clash II" based on "Generation Clash" with Udo Dirkschneider on vocals for their 1994 album Death Row. U.D.O. will still regularly perform tracks from this album, including "X-T-C".
1991: Roxette scored their fourth US No.1 single with 'Joyride.' The song was inspired by an interview with Paul McCartney who said that writing songs with John Lennon had been 'like a Joyride.'
1992: Iron Maiden release Fear Of The Dark.Fear of the Dark is the ninth studio album released by English heavy metal band Iron Maiden. Released on 11 May 1992, it was their third studio release to top the UK albums chart and last to feature Bruce Dickinson as lead vocalist until his return in 1999.
2001: Oasis, The Black Crowes and Spacehog kicked off 'The Tour of Brotherly Love', a North American tour at The Hard Rock in Las Vegas, Nevada. (The three bands featuring pairs of brothers, (Noel and Liam Gallagher, Chris and Rich Robinson, Royston and Antony Langdon, respectively).
2003: Jimi Hendrix Experience bassist Noel Redding died at his home in Ireland aged 57. Redding played on the classic Hendrix albums 'Are You Experienced', 'Axis: Bold as Love' and 'Electric Ladyland,' Right up until his death, Redding had been taking legal action against the Hendrix estate for payment estimated at £3.26 million for his part in recordings and for ongoing royalties. Had also been a member of Fat Mattress and formed The Noel Redding Band.
2010: Accept release The Accept Collection.
2015: The cover song Bad Company, from Five Finger Death Punch, is ranked #1 on the iTunes Top 100 Heavy Metal Songs Chart. This cover song is featured on the second studio album from Five Finger Death Punch from 2009: War Is The Answer.
