Rock and Metal History, a day like today June 3


1956: City authorities in Santa Cruz, California announced a total ban on Rock And Roll at public gatherings, describing the music as: “Detrimental to both the health and morals of our youth and community.”

1964: Rolling Stones make their US TV debut on The Hollywood Palace, with Dean Martin Ringo Starr collapses, and Jimmy Nichol becomes Beatles’ drummer for a week 1967: Doors debut on US singles chart with Light My Fire.

Jefferson Airplane appeared on American Bandstand on ABC-TV, performing the hits "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love".

Deep Purple in Rock

1970: Deep Purple released their fourth studio album: Deep Purple In Rock . This was Deep Purple’s first album to feature the classic Mark II lineup of vocalist Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, drummer Ian Paice and Roger Glover on bass.

Obscured by Clouds, Pink Floyd

1972: Pink Floyd released the Soundtrack to "Obscured By Clouds" on Harvest/EMI Records. Some copies of the album refer to the film by its English title, The Valley. The cover of Obscured by Clouds is an out-of-focus film still of a man in a tree. The lyrics and music tell the story of one's journeys. The album was released in the United Kingdom on 2 June 1972, and a few weeks later in the United States, by Harvest, reaching number 6 and number 46 respectively. A single, "Free Four", was issued in the US only.

1972: Eagles debut on US chart with Take it Easy

Thick As a Brick became the new #1 album from Jethro Tull.

1989: Pink Floyd appeared in concert at Olympijsky Stadium in Moscow, Russia.

Queen had the #1 album in the U.K. with The Miracle.

The Fine Young Cannibals started a seven-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'The Raw & The Cooked'.

2008: Disturbed released the album "Indestructible".Their fourth studio album by the American heavy metal band Disturbed. A self-produced effort,Indestructible is the first Disturbed album that did not feature Johnny K, the producer of Disturbed's previous three albums.The album features two songs, "Perfect Insanity" and "Divide", that were written by Disturbed prior to their first album, The Sickness, but were never previously released. Indestructible is also the third consecutive Disturbed album to debut at number-one on the Billboard 200.The album features significantly darker themes than any of Disturbed's previous work, according to the band.

2013: White Wizzard released their third full-length studio album in Europe: The Devil’s Cut.

1947: Dave Alexander, bass, Iggy Pop And The Stooges. Died 10th February 1975.

Billy Powell

1952: Billy Powell, keyboards, Lynyrd Skynyrd, (1974 US No. 8 single, 'Sweet Home Alabama', 1982 UK No.21 single 'Freebird'). Died at the age of 56 of a suspected heart attack in Florida on 28th Jan 2009. Powell called police saying he was having trouble breathing and emergency services tried to resuscitate the musician but he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Kerry King

1964: Kerry King, guitarist with American thrash metal band Slayer who released the 1986 album 'Reign in Blood'. He co-founded the band with Jeff Hanneman in 1981 and has been a member ever since. He became lead songwriter of the band after Hanneman's death. Kerry King also played as lead guitarist with Dave Mustaine in 1984 with his band Megadeth.
