Rock and Metal History, a day like today June 29


1968: A free concert was held in London's Hyde Park with Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Roy Harper. This afternoon concert was the first free festival to be held in Hyde Park. The concert was held to coincide with the release of Pink Floyd's second album, A Saucerful of Secrets.

1969: Led Zeppelin, The Liverpool Scene and Mick Abraham's Blodwyn Pig all played two shows (5.30 and 8.30pm) on this Sunday night at The Royal Albert Hall, London, England. Tickets from 5 to 15 shillings.

- The Jimi Hendrix Experienceplayed their last concert on the last day of the Denver Pop Festival.

1970: Chicago released the single "25 Or 6 To 4".

1973: Ian Gillan left Deep Purple after a concert in Japan.

1975: American singer songwriter Tim Buckley died of an overdose of heroin and morphine aged 28. Released nine albums including the 1972 release 'Greetings from L.A.' Buckley is the father of singer songwriter Jeff Buckley.

1976: Jefferson Starship released their album Spitfire.

1980: Brian Johnson played his first show with AC/DC in Namur ,Belgium

1982: Iron Maiden perform their first headline show in the U.S. New York’s Palladium, which is sold out.

1984: Bruce Springsteen kicked off the first leg of his Born in the USA Tour with a three night run at the Civic Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Springsteen would play a total of 156 shows ending on October 2, 1985 in Los Angeles.

1985: U2 played at Droke Park in Dublin, Ireland.

1992: Iron Maiden released the single ‘From Here To Eternity’.It was released as the second single from their album Fear of the Dark. It peaked at #21 on the UK Singles Chart. This is the first studio single to not feature Eddie in the artwork - second overall, after the live version of "Running Free" - using a picture of the song's music video instead.

1993: Aerosmith released their single "Cryin''.

1994: Oasis made their debut on BBC TV's Top Of The Pops performing their new single 'Shakermaker'.

1999: Slipknot released their debut album "Slipknot" through Roadrunner Records, following a demo containing a few of the songs which had been released in 1998, and was reissued in December 1999 with a slightly altered track listing and mastering as the result of a lawsuit. It was the first release by the band to be produced by Ross Robinson, who sought to refine Slipknot's sound rather than alter the group's musical direction. On September 9, 2009, Slipknot released a Special Edition version of the album to commemorate the tenth anniversary of its release. It was released in two forms, a digipak and a box set. All songs written and composed by Shawn Crahan, Paul Gray, Joey Jordison, Mick Thomson and Corey Taylor.

1999: Slaughter released their fifth studio album "Back To Reality". Slaughter reorganized following the tragic death of guitarist Tim Kelly with Back to Reality, which introduces new guitarist Jeff Blando.

2015: Next To None released today their new studio album "A Light In The Dark".

Born on this day

1948: Ian Paice, drummer, Deep Purple, (1970 UK No.2 single 'Black Night'), 1973 US No. 4 single 'Smoke On The Water'). Paice who is the only member to appear on every album the band has released has also worked with Whitesnake and Gary Moore.

1979: Tim McCord, bass, Evanescence, (joined in 2006), 2003 UK No.1 & US No.5 single ‘Bring Me To Life’, 2003 UK No.1 & US No.3 album ‘Fallen.’
