Rock and Metal History, a day like today June 4


1964: The Beatles played two performances at the KB Hallen, Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, Denmark on the first date of a 27-day world tour. Drummer Jimmy Nicol replaced Ringo Starr who was ill in hospital.

1967: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Procol Harum, Denny Laine and The Chiffons all appeared at The Saville Theatre, London. Both Paul McCartney and George Harrisonwere in the audience to see Hendrix perform the title track from Sgt. Pepper which had been released just 3 days earlier.

1969: Keyboardist Nicky Hopkins leaves Jeff Beck Group.

1972: Pink Floyd begins recording for their next album at Abbey Road Studios in London. It was originally going to be entitled Eclipse but wound up being called Dark Side of the Moon.

1975: The Rolling Stones became the first rock band to receive royalties for sales of their records in Russia.

1976: The Sex Pistols appeared at The Lesser Free Trade Hall, Manchester, England. The now legendary night is regarded as a catalyst to the punk rock movement. In the audience was, Morrissey, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook (soon to form Joy Division) and Mark E Smith, (The Fall). Tickets cost £1.

1977: Sweet hits #151 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, in the United States, with their fifth studio album. Album covers weren’t created with the help of computer design programs back then either; that is all done by hand with the use of an air brush!

1983: The Police started a four week run at No.1 in the UK with 'Every Breath You Take' the group's fifth and final No.1 single. Taken from the bands album Synchronicity, Sting won Song of the Year and The Police won Best Pop Performance for the song at the 1984 Grammy Awards.

1983: Motorhead released the album "Another Perfect Day".Another Perfect Day is the sixth studio album, which would also be their last full length original album with the label. It reached number 20 in the UK Albums Chart. It is the band's only studio album to feature lead guitarist Brian "Robbo" Robertson, best known for his work with Thin Lizzy.

1984: Bruce Springsteen released the album, 'Born In The USA', which became the best-selling album of 1985 in the United States (and also Springsteen's most successful album ever). The album produced a record-tying string of seven Top 10 singles (tied with Michael Jackson's Thriller and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814).

1988: Van Halen’s OU 812 LP hits UK chart

Hysteria by Def Leppard spent its 37th week in the Top 10 of the album chart.

1992: Iron Maiden played a gig at the Oval pub, Norwich before 400 fans as The Nodding Donkeys, as a thank you to the pub's landlord Chris Hiles.

LOAD, Metallica

1996: Metallica released the album Load, their sixth studio album.by Elektra Records. It sold 680,000 units in its first week, making it the biggest opening week for Metallica and the biggest debut of 1996.Load, released approximately five years after the commercially successful album Metallica, saw the band shifting toward hard rock and away from their thrash metal roots. As on previous releases, the album's fourteen songs began as rough demos created by principal songwriters James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich in Ulrich's basement recording studio, "The Dungeon".

1997: Jeff Buckley's body was discovered floating in the Mississippi River. Buckley had disappeared when swimming on May 29th in Wolf River Harbor, while wearing boots, all of his clothing, and singing the chorus of 'Whole Lotta Love' by Led Zeppelin. A roadie in Buckley's band, had remained on shore. After moving a radio and guitar out of reach of the wake from a passing tugboat, he looked up to see that Buckley had vanished.

2000: Bon Jovi had the #1 U.K. album with Crush.

2007: Dream Theater released the album "Systematic Chaos"

Super Colider, Megadeth

2013: Megadeth released the album "Super Collider" their fourteenth studio album.It is Megadeth's first album to be released on Tradecraft, a Universal label created for frontmanDave Mustaine. In the U.S., a special edition of the album was made available exclusively through Best Buy retailers. The album features a guest appearance from Disturbed and Device vocalist David Draiman. On April 23, 2013, the title track was released on iTunes as the album's lead single.It marked the first time the band had released more than one album with the same lineup since 1997's Cryptic Writings, however it is the band's final album to feature drummer Shawn Drover and guitarist Chris Broderick, due to their departures from Megadeth in November 2014. The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and has sold over 86,000 copies in the United States as of December 2015.
