1962: Cliff Burton, bassist of Metallica, was born in Castro Valley, California; died September 27, 1986 in Ljungby, Sweden when the band's tour bus crashed as it was traveling from Stockholm, Sweden to Copenhagen, Denmark.Burton performed on the band's first three studio albums: Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. He also received a posthumous writing credit for the song "To Live Is to Die" from the band's fourth studio album.
1967: The Beatles record "A Day In The Life."
- “On a Carousel” by the Hollies was released.
- The Troggs released their second studio album, Trogglodynamite.
1968: The "Magical Mystery Tour" Soundtrack by the Beatles dominated the Album chart for a sixth week.
1975: Dave Alexander (bassist for The Stooges) dies of pulmonary edema at age 27 after being admitted to an Ann Arbor hospital for alcohol-related pancreatitis.
1977: The Clash began recording their debut album at CBS Studios in London.
1978: Van Halen's self-titled debut album was released.
1979: Dire Straits release "Sultans Of Swing."
1985: Born in the USA became Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s first #1 album on the UK chart.
1997: Blur released their hit self-titled fifth album.
1997: Brian Connolly, singer of Sweet, died of kidney and liver failure in Slough, England at age 52.
2008: Famous spaghetti western composer Ennio Morricone and Bruce Springsteen win the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental. Springsteen covered Morricone's classic "Once Upon a Time in the West."
