1947: Derek Shulman of Gentle Giant, who later signed Bon Jovi when he worked for PolyGram Records, was born in Glasgow, Scotland.
1962: Rock singer and songwriter Sheryl Crow born in Kennett, Missouri.
1963: The Beatles recorded "Twist & Shout" and "I Saw Her Standing There."
1964: The Beatles played their first U.S. concert at the Coliseum in Washington, DC
1966: Cher recorded "Bang Bang."
1967: The Rolling Stones release their album Between The Buttons in America, with "Let's Spend the Night Together" and "Ruby Tuesday" on the track list.
- "I'm A Believer" by the Monkees landed a seventh week at #1.
1970: Fleetwood Mac, the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead performed at the Fillmore East in New York City.
1972: Led Zeppelin released the single ‘Black Dog’ & ‘Misty Mountain Hop’ from their fourth album Led Zeppelin IV.
1977: Mike Shinoda (of Linkin Park) is born in Agoura Hills, Los Angeles.
1977: Jethro Tull released their tenth studio album, Songs from the Wood. It is considered to be the first of a trio of folk rock albums that also include Heavy Horses and Stormwatch.
1980: Blondie released the single "Call Me".
- A new artist was about to be discovered and on this date. His name was Christopher Cross and he had a lot of believers in the music business. Michael McDonald sang backing vocals for Chris on his first hit was "Ride Like The Wind".
1981: Eric Clapton released “I Can’t Stand It,” the first single from his seventh solo studio album, Another Ticket.
1983: Bonnie Tyler released the single "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in the U.K.
1989: Guns N' Roses spend their fifth week at #1 on the Album chart in their second return to the top with Appetite for Destruction.
1992: Motley Crue fired lead singer Vince Neil when he said that he had lost his passion for music and was more interested in racing cars.
2007: The Doors, Joan Baez, Booker T. & the MG's and the Grateful Dead (all the people that the Grammys had never recognized during their careers) were given Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
2014: Queen became the first band to sell 6 million copies of an individual LP. Queen’s 1981 Greatest Hits, which included the monster tunes ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ & ‘We Will Rock You’, was reportedly owned by 1 out of 3 families in the UK.
