1939: Ray Manzarek (of The Doors) is born in Chicago, Illinois.
1950: Steve Hackett (guitarist for Genesis) is born in Pimlico, London, England.
1951: Gil Moore, drummer and vocalist of Triumph ("Hold On" and "Lay It On The Line") was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
1952: Grammy Award winning American singer and songwriter Michael McDonald, who with The Doobie Brothers had the 1979 US No.1 single 'What A Fool Believes', and the 1993 UK No.7 single 'Long Train Runnin'. He began his career singing back-up vocals with Steely Dan and has also worked with Kenny Loggins, David Cassidy, Van Halen and Toto.
1956: Brian Robertson, guitarist of Thin Lizzy, was born Glasgow, Scotland.
1966: The Rolling Stones released the single "19th Nervous Breakdown" in the United States.
- Paul Crook, guitarist who worked with Meat Loaf, Anthrax and Sebastian Bach, was born in Plainfield, New Jersey.
1972: Yes released the single "Roundabout".
1977: Pink Floyd released their tenth studio album Animals in the US, where it reached No.3 in the charts. The album's cover image, a pig floating between two chimneys on Battersea Power Station, was conceived by bassist Roger Waters and realised by long-time design and photographic collaborators Hipgnosis.
1994: Alice In Chains debuted at # on the Album chart with Jar of Flies.
1995: Van Halen scored their first number one album, when Balance topped the chart.
1997: David Bowie is awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It is located outside the Hollywood Galaxy Theatre.
2000: Screamin' Jay Hawkins of "I Put A Spell On You" fame dies at age 70.
- John London, songwriter and bassist who worked with Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor and the Monkees, and wrote "The Tide Is High" for Blondie, died in Rockport, Texas at age 58.
2010: The surviving members of Status Quo were awarded Officers of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth of England in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
2018: Judas Priest guitarist Glenn Tipton announces he will no longer tour with the band due to Parkinson's disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2008. Andy Sneap takes his place.
