Rock and Metal history, a day like today February 2

1942: Graham Nash is born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. After founding The Hollies in 1962, he leaves in 1968 to make more newsworthy music, which he does with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.


Alan McKay

1948: Alan McKay, guitarist of Earth, Wind & Fire, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

1949: The first 45 RPM record was released.


Ross Valory

1950: Ross Valory, bass guitarist of Journey and the Steve Miller Band, was born in San Francisco, California.

1963: The Beatles began their first British tour supporting Helen Shapiro.

1966: The Rolling Stones released “19th Nervous Breakdown.” It peaked at number two on the singles chart.

1968: After cycling through a number of band names (including Bag 'O Nails and Navy Blue), Ian Anderson's group plays the Marquee Club in London as Jethro Tull, a name that sticks. Their agent suggested the name; Jethro Tull is the inventor of the seed drill.

1975: Billy Mohler, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist of the Calling was born.

1976: - Genesis released A Trick Of The Tail, their seventh studio album, and the first to feature drummer Phil Collins as full-time lead vocalist following the departure of original

vocalist Peter Gabriel. After auditioning over 400 vocalists, which saw Collins teaching the potential lead singers the songs, the band decided that Collins should be the new vocalist.

- Peter Frampton released the single "Show Me The Way".

- Lynyrd Skynyrd release

Gimme Back My Bullets

. It's their fourth album, following Nuthin' Fancy and preceding Street Survivors, which is their last release before a fatal plane crash ends the original lineup.

1979: At the age of 21, ex-Sex Pistol bass player Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose in the New York City apartment of his present girlfriend, Michelle Robinson.

1980: Pink Floyd achieved a third week at #1 on the Album chart with The Wall.


Killers

1981: IRON MAIDEN released their second studio album, Killers, in the UK. Paul Di’Anno was still the lead singer for this studio album and would be his last with IRON MAIDEN.

- Hi Infidelity, the breakthrough album by REO Speedwagon, was certified platinum.

1985: Born in the U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen spent a seventh and final week at #1 on the Album chart.

1991: Sting ruled the U.K. Album chart with The Soul Cages.


1994: Bruce Springsteen released the single "Streets Of Philadelphia".
