Rock and Metal History, a day like today February 9
1940: Brian Bennett (drummer for The Shadows) is born in Palmers Green, North London, England.
1942: Mark Mathis (of The Newbeats) is born in Hahira, Georgia.
1947: Country rocker Joe Ely is born in Amarillo, Texas.
1960: William "Holly" Johnson, bassist of Big in Japan and lead singer of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, was born in Liverpool, Merseyside, England.
1962: Neil Sedaka recorded "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" for the first time.
1966: Rachel Bolan (real name James Southworth), songwriter and bassist of Skid Row, was born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey.
1967: The Beatles record "Fixing A Hole."
1979: UB40 play their first live show, sharing the bill with another local group called the Au Pairs at The Hare & Hounds Pub in Birmingham. In 2011, a plaque went up outside the pub to mark the performance.
1980: A great new group from Australia was introduced to us on this date as Air Supply first appeared on the chart and on the radio with their debut single--"Lost In Love".
1981: Bill Haley, whose song "Rock Around The Clock" not only officially started the Rock Era but remains one of The Top 100 Songs of the Rock Era, died of a heart attack at his home in Harlingen, Texas at age 56.
1990: Midnight Oil release the album Blue Sky Mining. The lead single, "Blue Sky Mine," is inspired by the Wittenoom industrial disaster in the band's native Australia. The song is a Top 10 hit on the ARIA singles chart and tops the rock charts in the US.
1993: Mick Jagger released a solo album called "Wandering Spirit."
- Paul McCartney released a solo album, "Off The Ground."
2005: Roger Daltrey, lead singer of the Who, was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace in London.
