Rock and Metal History, a day like today June 19


1965: The Kinks made their U.S. debut at New York’s Academy of Music when they opened for another British band, the Moody Blues.

-The Who, Solomon Burke, Zoot Money, Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Spencer Davis Group, Marianne Faithful, Long John Baldry, The Birds, (featuring a young Ronnie Wood), Dave Witting and the Ray Martin Group all appeared at Uxbridge Blues Festival, England. Tickets cost from 7/6 to 10/6.


1968: No #1 for Rolling Stones with Jumping Jack Flash UK 45. Keith Richards has stated that he and Jagger wrote the lyrics while staying at Richards' country house, where they were awoken one morning by the sound of gardener Jack Dyer walking past the window. When Jagger asked what the noise was, Richards responded: "Oh, that's Jack – that's jumpin' Jack."

1974: The Delinquents a band featuring Mick Jones (later of The Clash) made their debut at the Students union bar, Queen Elizabeth College, Kensington.

1982: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with their cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’ “Crimson and Clover”. It was their second top ten single in the U.S.

1984: Bruce Springsteen continued his dominance of the US rock concert circuit when he began a 10-night residency at the Meadowlands arena in New Jersey. Over 200,000 tickets were sold in just over a day.

1987: Guns N’ Roses performed their first concert outside of the U.S. at London’s legendary Marquee Club

1989: German thrash metal band Kreator released the album "Extreme Aggression" their fourth studio album by Kreator .While the band had already gained a sizeable following in the US due to their 1987 tour with the crossover thrashband D.R.I., this album introduced many American fans to Kreator, primarily through heavy rotation of the "Betrayer" music video on MTV's Headbangers Ball, which was partly shot at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. This album was their first issued in the US by Epic Records. The album was also available on picture disc vinyl.The album's original artwork was a monster-like creature painting a picture of a cannibal eating a person's head. However, it was quickly replaced with a new artwork, depicting an image of the band in front of an orange background.

1992: The Greenpeace Stop Sellafield, campaign concert took place at G-Mex in Manchester, England with U2, Big Audio Dynamite II, Public Enemy and Kraftwerk.
