Rock and Metal History, a day like today June 20


1969: The first of a three day Festival in Newport, California, featuring: Ike And Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Byrds, The Rascals, Steppenwolf, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, Johnny Winter, Eric Burdon and Love. A three day ticket cost $15 (£8.80). Hendrix received $125,000 for his appearance, at the time it was the highest fee ever paid to a rock act for a single appearance.

1983: Iron Maiden released as the second single "The Trooper" from the album Piece of Mind. A live version of the song, from Death on the Road, was issued in 2005. The song was also appeared in several Iron Maiden tribute albums. Written by bassist and founder-member Steve Harris, the song is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854, which took place during the Crimean War and inspired by Lord Tennyson's poem of the same name.

1986: Phil Collins, Dire Straits, Tina Turner and Elton John all appeared at the fourth annual 'Prince's Trust Rock Gala' held in London.

1987: Aerosmith appeared at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, the first night on their Permanent Vacation 147 date world tour. Over the years the venue has been the home to the Texxas Jam, which has featured Deep Purple, Boston, Journey, Ted Nugent, Scorpions, Cheap Trick, Van Halen, Blue Öyster Cult, Sammy Hagar, Rush, Nazareth, Styx, Foghat, Santana and The Eagles. Eric Claptonnotably held his first massive 3-day Crossroads Guitar Festival here in 2004.


Destiny

1988: Saxon released the album "Destiny" their ninth studio album . It is also the only studio album to feature the rhythm section of drummer Nigel Durham and bassist Paul Johnson


The real Thing

1989: Faith No More released their third studio album "The Real Thing" featuring the hit single "Epic". It was first released through Slash Records on June 20, 1989.The first release by the band not to feature vocalist Chuck Mosley. Instead, the album featured Mike Patton from the experimental band Mr. Bungle. On this album, Faith No More advanced their sound range combining heavy metal, funk and rock.On March 2, 2015 a deluxe edition containing previous unreleased tracks was released via Slash Records.

Forbidden

1995: BlackSabbath released their eighteenth studio album "Forbidden". This recording saw the reunion of Black Sabbath's Tyr-era line-up from 1990, with the return of Neil Murray and Cozy Powell. It was the last album to feature Tony Martin on vocals and the last by the band until 2013 when Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler returned for the album 13. The album sold 21,000 copies in the U.S in its first week and as of 2013, Forbidden has sold 191,000 copies in the US.

1998: Black Sabbath, Foo Fighters, Korn, Pantera, Soulfly, Slayer, Fear Factory, Coal Chamber, Life of Agony, Limp Bizkit, Entombed, Human Waste Project, Neurosis, and Pitchshifter all appeared at Ozzfest, Milton Keynes Bowl, England.

Born on this day

1948: Don Airey, keyboards, Deep Purple since 2002.

1954: Michael Anthony, bass guitarist, Van Halen and other acts. Anthony markets a line of hot sauces and related products named Mad Anthony.

1971:Jeordie Osborne White (Twiggy Ramirez), bass, Marilyn Manson, (1998 US No.1 album, 'Mechanical Animals', UK No. 12 single, 'The Dope Show'). Nine Inch Nails, (2005 US No.1 album ‘White Teeth’). Also a member of Goon Moon, Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle.

- Ian Matthews drummer with Kasabian. Their 2014 release 48:13 became their fourth UK No.1 album.

1972: Chino Moreno, vocals, Deftones, (2003 US No.2 & UK No.7 album ‘Deftones’). Also a member of the side-project groups Team Sleep, Crosses, Saudade, and Palms.
