Rock and Metal History, a day like today June 28


1968: Working at Abbey Road studios The Beatles recorded Good Night, John Lennon's lullaby for his 5-year-old son Julian with Ringo singing the lead vocal. The track appeared on The White Album.

1968: Pink Floyd released their second album A Saucerful Of Secrets in the UK. It is both the last Pink Floyd album on which Syd Barrett would appear and the only studio album to which all five band members contributed. The album sleeve was designed by Hipgnosis, a new company formed by the band's friends Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey 'Po' Powell, who were paid £110 for their efforts.

1969: Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Nice, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Ten Years After, Taste, The Liverpool Scene and Chicken Shack all appeared at The Bath Festival of Blues in England, with DJ John Peel. Tickets cost 18/6. The festival proved very popular, selling out all 30,000 tickets in the first week, surprising both the townsfolk and the promoters. The only major problem occurred when the Nice's use of bagpipers caused the stage to collapse.

- Creedence Clearwater Revival peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Bad Moon Rising” which was their second top ten single in the U.S.

1971: Rod Stewart released the single "Maggie May".

1978: Kansas named Deputy Ambassadors of goodwill by UNICEF


1985: ACDC released their ninth internationally released studio album and the tenth to be released in Australia , "Fly On The Wall" .All songs were written by Angus Young (guitar),Malcolm Young (guitar), and Brian Johnson (vocals). The album was re-released in 2003 as part of the AC/DC Remasters series.It was AC/DC's first album since the original Australian version of High Voltage not to include drummer Phil Rudd, who was replaced by Simon Wright

1988: Stryper reeased their fourth studio album In God We Trust. After the hard-rocking To Hell with the Devil, Stryper decided to follow up with an album that was more pop-leaning and radio-friendly. In God We Trust achieved Gold record status, selling over half a million copies.

1994: David Lee Roth began a solo tour in Los Angeles.

1996: Kiss kicked off their reunion tour dubbed the Alive/Worldwide Tour at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. Alice In Chains was the opening act.

1997: Radiohead went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their third album OK Computer. The British groups first self-produced album later appeared in many critics' lists and listener polls for best album of the year and also won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance.

-The Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of The Moon spent its 1056th week on the US album chart. It was rumoured at the time that if the album was played while watching The Wizard of Oz movie, and started exactly when the MGM lion roared the third time during the movie's intro, very interesting connections could be made between the two.

1999: Testament released their eighth studio album "The Gathering". It was the first release the band had done with Spitfire Records. Co-produced by band members, Chuck Billy and Eric Peterson, this was the first album featuring new musicians Steve DiGiorgio on bass guitar and Dave Lombardo on drums. Billy, Peterson and Lombardo, along with longtime Testament collaborator Del James, are also given composer credits on the album. Album cover artwork for The Gathering was done by Dave McKean who also did the cover art for the two prior Testament studio albums Demonic and Low.

2003: Metallica performed at the Rock Werchter Festival in Belgium.

2005: Megadeth released their greatest hits album "Greatest Hits: Back to the Start"

2011: Queensryche released their twelfth studio album "Dedicated To Chaos" . The album was released first in Japan on June 21, 2011, and a week later in the United States on June 28, 2011, and is the band's first album for Roadrunner Records' Loud & Proud label. Dedicated to Chaos was recorded by Queensrÿche as a quartet; Parker Lundgren, who was a guest guitarist in this album, subsequently became a permanent member of the band. This was the last album by Queensrÿche before Tate was fired from the band in 2012.

2013: Coldplay's 2011 headline appearance on the Glastonbury Pyramid Stage was voted the top Glastonbury moment by BBC Radio listeners. Radiohead and Blur's 2009 Pyramid Stage appearances polled second and third respectively, with Bruce Springsteen's performance of Thunder Road in 2009 coming fourth.

2016: Elvis Presley's original guitarist, Scotty Moore, dies at age 84. Moore, who played on rock classics like "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Jailhouse Rock," was the last living member of the team (Elvis, bass player Bill Black and producer Sam Phillips) that created The King's legendary sound.
