Rock and Metal History, a day like today June 9

1964: During an evening session Bob Dylan recorded Mr. Tambourine Man at Columbia Recording Studios in New York City. This was the first session for the Another Side Of Bob Dylan, which saw Dylan recording fourteen original compositions that night. The Byrds later recorded a version of Mr. Tambourine Man that was released as their first single and reached No.1 on both the US & UK Chart. The Byrds' recording of the song was influential in initiating the musical subgenre of folk-rock, leading many contemporary bands to mimic its fusion of jangly guitars and intellectual lyrics in the wake of the single's success.

1967: Pink Floyd played two gigs in one day, the first at the College of Commerce in Hull, and then the UFO at The Blarney Club, Tottenham Court Road, London, England.

1972: Bruce Springsteen signed with Columbia Records and started to assemble the E Street Band from various Asbury Park ex-band mates.

1978: The Rolling Stones released Some Girls, their first studio album recorded with Ronnie Wood as a full member. The album cover was designed by Peter Corriston and featured The Rolling Stones in garish drag alongside select female celebrities and lingerie ads. The cover immediately ran into trouble when Lucille Ball, Farrah Fawcett, Liza Minnelli (representing her mother Judy Garland), Raquel Welch, and the estate of Marilyn Monroe threatened legal action.

1997: Testament released the album "Demonic" their seventh studio album. Released with original members Chuck Billy (Vocals) and Eric Peterson (Guitar), the record also features artists Derrick Ramirez (Bass), Gene Hoglan (Drums) and Glen Alvelais (Guitar). Ramirez was previously the band's first lead singer (although here he is performing on bass guitar), and Alvelais had previously performed with Testament on the 1993 live album, Return to the Apocalyptic City. Album cover artwork for "Demonic" was done by Dave McKean who also did the cover art for the prior Testament studio album, Low and would go on to do their next, The Gathering. The album was reissued on January 8, 2008 under license from Burnt Offerings via label Prosthetic, featuring new cover artwork.

1997: Deep Purple release " Live at the Olympia '96"

1998: David Lee Roth released the album "DLR Band" the fifth full-length studio album, the then-former and now current vocalist of Van Halen. It remains the only installment on Roth's own wawazat!! label.The album's cover artwork features a picture of model Bettie Page.DLR Band debuted at #172 on the charts with 8,000 copies sold in the first week. Within a year the album had sold 65,000 copies,

1998: Slayer released the album "Diabolus in Musica" their eighth studio album. It is the second studio album to feature drummer Paul Bostaph. Although receiving mixed critical reviews, the album sold 46,000 copies in its first week to peak at number 31 on the Billboard 200.Guitarist Jeff Hanneman wrote most of the album's content which has been described as Slayer's most experimental album. It is the band's first studio album to be played mostly in C♯ tuning. The album's title is a Latinterm for "The Devil in Music", a musical interval known for its dissonance. Lyrical themes explored on the album include religion, cultural deviance, death, insanity, war, and homicide

2002: It was announced that Rolling Stone Mick Jagger was to be given a knighthood for his services to music.

2008: Venom released the album "Hell", their twelfth studio album . It was released in 2008 through Universal. It is the first Venom album to feature La Rage on guitar and the last to feature Antton on drums, who left Venom in 2009 and was replaced by Danté.

1941: Jon Lord, keyboards, Deep Purple, (1970 UK No.2 single 'Black Night'), 1973 US No. 4 single 'Smoke On The Water'). Lord died of cancer on 16th July 2012.

1950: Trevor Boulder, bass, Spiders From Mars and Uriah Heep. Bolder died from cancer on 21st May 2013 at the age of 62. Bolder appeared on the studio albums Hunky Dory (1971), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), Aladdin Sane (1973), and Pin Ups (1973). He joined Uriah Heep in 1976, replacing John Wetton.

1951: Pete Gill former drummer with Motorhead and Saxon

1959: Gregg Bissonette former drummer with David Lee Roth

1978: Matthew Bellamy, guitar, vocals, keyboards, Muse, (2003 UK No.1 album ‘Absolution’, 2003 UK No.8 single, ‘Time Is Running Out’). Bellamy won the Sexiest Male Award at the 2007 NME Awards, (and won again in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014).
