Rock and Metal history, January 23

1950: Danny Federici (organist, accordionist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band) is born in Flemington, New Jersey.

1953: Robin Zander (lead singer of Cheap Trick) is born in Beloit, Wisconsin.

1959: Earl Falconer (bass player for UB40) is born in Meriden, Warwickshire, England.

1967: Pink Floyd spent the first of three days recording the Syd Barrett songs Arnold Layne and Candy And A Current Bun at Sound Techniques Studios, Chelsea, London. According to Roger Waters, Arnold Layne was based on a real person - a transvestite whose primary pastime was stealing women's clothes and undergarments from washing lines in Cambridge.

1974: Kita, drummer with Lordi. They became Finland's first ever Eurovision Song Contest winners after their song 'Hard Rock Hallelujah' won the contest held in Athens in 2006.



Station to station

1976: David Bowie released his tenth studio album Station to Station, , which was the vehicle for his last great character, the Thin White Duke. The album was recorded after he completed shooting Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth, and the cover artwork featured a still from the movie. The album made the top five in both the UK and US charts.

1978: Van Halen released their first single "You Really Got Me", a remake of the Kinks' classic.

Terry Kath

1978: Terry Kath of Chicago died after accidentally shooting himself in the head at a party with a pistol he didn't know was loaded. He died eight days shy of his 32nd birthday.



1980: Prince's single "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" was released.

1988: Seattle producer Jack Endino oversees the first recording session of an unknown, unnamed grunge band soon to be called Nirvana. The session takes place at Reciprocal Recording, where many of the genre's pioneers - including Soundgarden, Mudhoney, and Green River - cut their seminal albums. Nirvana returns to the studio a few months later to work on their debut album, Bleach.

1988: The California Raisins' "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" peaks at #84 on Billboard's Hot 100.


Allen Collins

1990: Original Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins, a survivor of their 1977 plane crash, dies of pneumonia - a complication of paralysis caused by a 1986 car accident.

1997: "Louie Louie" composer (and original performer) Richard Berry dies of heart failure at age 61.

2000: Supernatural by Santana was the #1 album.

2009: Doro released the album “Fear No Evil” . Tarja Turunen did vocals on the song "Walking with the Angels".

2009: Sepultura released the album "A-Lex". This is the first album featuring drummer Jean Dolabella, since the departure of Igor Cavalera in 2006.

2011: OzzyOsbourne released the single “Let It Die”. It was released as the third single from the album “Scream”.

2012: Dark Adrenaline the sixth studio album by Italian metal band Lacuna Coil, was released.. The album was produced by Don Gilmore (Linkin Park, Bullet For My Valentine), and mixed by Marco Barusso (Cayne, Modà, Laura Pausini, Eros Ramazzotti). The album debuted at number fifteen on the Billboard 200 chart with initial sales of 20,000. It also charted in the top five on four other Billboard charts including the Rock Albums, Alternative Albums, Hard Rock Albums and the Independent Albums charts. The album was also successful throughout Europe, charting in ten countries, six of which Lacuna Coil have achieved their highest chart positions in those countries to date. This album has charted in fifteen countries.

2015: Decadent was released. It is the 15th studio album by German heavy metal band U.D.O. It was released on 23 January 2015 in Europe and 3 February 2015 in the United States through AFM Records.On 12 December 2014, "Decadent" was released as the first single.It is the last album to feature drummer Francesco Jovino as well as guitarist Kasperi Heikkinen

Jimmy Bain

2016: Scottish musician Jimmy Bain died aged 68 while in his cabin on Def Leppard's "Hysteria on the High Seas" cruise. The cause of death was determined to be lung cancer. Bain was best known for playing bass guitar in the bands Rainbow and Dio, he also worked with Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott, co-writing on his solo albums as well as Ian Hunter, Gary Moore and John Cale.
