Rock and Metal history, January 24
1953: Nigel Glockler was born. He is an English musician, best known as the longtime drummer for the heavy metal band Saxon, which he first joined in 1981.
1967: John Ro Myung was born. He is a Korean American bassist and a founding member of the progressive metal group Dream Theater.
1968: Michael Kiske was born. He is a German singer and lead vocalist for the German power metal band Helloween. Kiske has released four solo albums, two albums with the hard rock band Unisonic, has participated on various metal and rock related projects, such as Avantasia, Place Vendome and Kiske/Somerville and has also performed with numerous bands as a guest vocalist.
1969: Jethro Tull play their first American show, opening for Blood, Sweat & Tears at New York's Fillmore East.
1989: Skid Row release their self-titled debut album. Two days later, they join Bon Jovi on the New Jersey Syndicate tour. The album, which includes "18 And Life" and "Youth Gone Wild," goes on to sell over 5 million copies in America.
1991: The Cure film their MTV Unplugged special at Limehouse TV Studios in London. The acoustic set includes an alternate version of their new song "A Letter To Elise." Audience members are also given kazoos to replace the synthesizer riffs on "The Walk.".
1995: Balance, the tenth studio album by American rock band Van Halen was released, by Warner Bros. Records. The album is the last of the band's four studio releases to feature Sammy Hagar as the lead singer. It is also the final Van Halen album to feature bassist Michael Anthony in its entirety. Balance reached number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 in February 1995 and reached Triple Platinum status on May 12, 2004, by selling more than three million copies in the U.S. "The Seventh Seal" was nominated for a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance.
2012: Resolution the sixth studio album by American heavy metal band Lamb of God, was released. It is available on a single disc CD or a two-disc deluxe edition.
2014: Delivering the Black, the tenth studio album from German heavy metal band Primal Fear, was released, via Frontiers Records.
2016: Butch Trucks, co-founder and drummer of The Allman Brothers Band, dies at age 69 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
2020: Ballistic, Sadistic the seventeenth studio album by Canadian thrash metal band Annihilator, was released via Silver Lining Music and Neverland Music on January 24, 2020, and was produced by group frontman Jeff Waters. The album was preceded by singles "I Am Warfare" on October 10, 2019, "Psycho Ward" on November 27, "Armed to the Teeth"on December 13 and "Dressed Up for Evil" on January 17, 2020.
2020: Aurora, a compilation album by American rock band Breaking Benjamin, was released by Hollywood Records. It is a collection of acoustic, reimagined versions of previously released songs, plus one new song.
