1948: Corky Laing, drummer with heavy rock group Mountain who had the 1971 album 'Nantucket Sleighride'.
1955: Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was born.He was an American musician and songwriter. He was the main songwriter and guitarist of the American rock band Van Halen, which he co-founded in 1972 with his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, bassist Mark Stone, and singer David Lee Roth. He is regarded as one of the all-time greatest guitar players in rock historyand was well known for popularizing the tapping guitar solo technique, allowing rapid arpeggios to be played with two hands on the fretboard.
1961: Carl Thomas Keifer was born.He is an American vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter for the band Cinderella.
1961: Elvis Presley was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Are You Lonesome Tonight'.
1968: Pink Floyd played their first gig without Syd Barrett. It took place at Southampton University where the band was supported by a group called Tyrannosaurus Rex, which would later be named T Rex.
1973: Who Do We Think We Are is the seventh studio album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple, was released . It was Deep Purple's last album with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover until 1984’s Perfect Strangers. Musically, the record showed a move to a more blues-based sound, even featuring scat singing. Although its production and the band's behaviour after its release showed the group in turmoil, with frontman Gillan remarking that "we'd all had major illnesses" and felt considerable fatigue, the album was a commercial success. Deep Purple became the US's top selling artist in 1973. The album also featured the energetic hard rock single "Woman from Tokyo", which has been performed on several tours by the band over the years.
1973: Sweet were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Blockbuster'. The glam rockers only UK No.1 of 15 Top 40 hits.
1976: Will Adler was born. He is the rhythm guitarist and songwriter in American metal titans Lamb Of God, forerunners of the new wave of American Heavy Metal.
1986: Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins is left paralyzed from a car accident that kills his female companion. He can't play with the re-formed band the next year, but chooses his replacement: Randall Hall.
1986: Matthew Kiichi Heafy was born.He is an American musician best known as the guitarist and lead vocalist for heavy metal band Trivium. He was also the lead vocalist for the band Capharnaum, along with Trivium's former producer Jason Suecof.
1988: Skyscraper was released. It is the second full-length studio album by David Lee Roth andiIt was released during his solo career after his departure as the original lead vocalist from Van Halen.
1991: Queen had their second UK No.1 with 'Innuendo'.
1994: Strange Highways was released in the U.S. It is the sixth studio album by American heavy metal band Dio. It's also their first album since Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice's reunion tour with Black Sabbath. The European release was in October 1993 while the U.S. release was in January 1994.
2010: MAG: S.V.E.R., the Original Soundtrack From The Video Game was released by Apocalyptica.
2015: Venom released the album “From The Very Depths”.
2016: English singer-songwriter Colin Vearncombe, who with Black had the 1987 UK No.8 single 'Wonderful Life', died at the age of 53.
2018: Catharsis was released, the ninth studio album by American heavy metal band Machine Head. The album is the first to be completely co-written by all of the band's members since The More Things Change... (1997), and is the final Machine Head studio album to feature drummer Dave McClain and guitarist Phil Demmel, both of whom left the band less than a year after its release.
