1948: Lonnie Jordan, singer, keyboardist and founder of the group War, was born in San Diego, California.
1960: The Beatles played at the Kaiserkeller Club in Hamburg, Germany withoutGeorge Harrison. The guitarist had been deported on this day for being underage (he was 17) and not legally allowed to remain in a nightclub after midnight.
1968: Alex James, bassist and songwriter of Blur, was born in Boscombe, Bournemouth, England.
1970: Two months after his death Jimi Hendrix was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Voodoo Child (Slight Return)' the closing track on Electric Ladyland, the third and final album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. This was the guitarist's only UK No.1 single. Hendrix's solo on the track was named the 11th greatest solo of all-time in Guitar World's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos.
1970: Led Zeppelin III held on to the #1 position on the chart for the fourth week. Abraxas by Santana was a solid 2
1974: After years of estrangement, Marty Balin reunited with Jefferson Airplane (now called Jefferson Starship) during their show at the Winterland in San Francisco, California, paving the way for Balin to rejoin the group for their Red Octopus album
1980: REO Speedwagon released the epic album Hi Infidelity.
1981: Queen and David Bowie were at No.1 in the UK with 'Under Pressure. They recorded the song together when both acts were working in a German recording studio. It was David Bowie's first released collaboration with another recording artist.
1981: The great 4 album by Foreigner took over at #1 from Tattoo You by the Rolling Stones. Ghost in the Machine by the Police moved to #3, followed by Escape from Journey.
1987: Billy Idol knocked Tiffany from the No.1 single position on the US singles chart with his version of Tommy James ' Mony Mony'. Tiffany had been at No.1 with another Tommy James song ' I Think We're Alone Now.'
1987: Poison hits #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their power ballad: I Won’t Forget You. This song is featured on the 1987 debut Poison album: Look What The Cat Dragged In.
1988: Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page set out on his first ever-solo tour at The Hummingbird, Birmingham, appearing with John Miles and the son of Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, Jason Bonham.
1991: Aerosmith made a guest appearance in the Simpsons TV animated comedy. Other acts who have appeared on the show included: Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, U2, The Moody Blues, The B-52's, The Who,R.E.M., Phish, Blink-182, Metallica, and The White Stripes.
1995: The Beatles Anthology 1 was released in the US, featuring 60 tracks including the track 'Free As A Bird', a song originally composed and recorded in 1977 as a home demo by John Lennon. In 1995 a studio version of the recording, incorporating contributions from Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr was released as a single by The Beatles.
1995: Bruce Springsteen kicked off his Ghost of Tom Joad Tour at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the first of 128 shows.
2005: The Rolling Stones released, Rarities 1971-2003
2006: KISS released their 4 CD box set: KISS ALIVE! 1975 – 2000.
2006: IRON MAIDEN performed a live concert in Oslo, Norway. This was one of many stops on IRON MAIDEN’s Nordic Tour ’06.
2007: The Red Hot Chili Peppers were suing a US network over the name of its TV show, Californication saying the title was "immediately associated in the mind of the consumer" with its 1999 album and single release. The band filed a lawsuit against Showtime Network - the makers of the TV show, which featured David Duchovny as a writer going through a mid-life crisis. "For some TV show to come along and steal our identity is not right," said the band's singer, Anthony Kiedis. He described Californication as "the signature CD, video and song of the band's career".
