Rock and Metal History, November 27


1942: Jimi Hendrix guitarist, singer, songwriter who had the 1967 UK No.6 single 'Hey Joe', the 1970 UK No.1 single 'Voodoo Chile', and the 1968 US No.1 and UK No.6 album 'Electric Ladyland'. Hendrix who is widely considered to be the greatest guitarist in musical history made appearances at the 1967Monterey Pop Festival, the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival and the 1970 Isle Of WightFestival. Hendrix died on 18th September 1970 after choking on his own vomit.

1945: Randy Brecker, Blood Sweat & Tears, (1969 US No.12 & UK No.35 single 'You've Made Me So Very Happy').

1959: Charlie Burchill, guitar, Simple Minds, (1985 US No.1 single 'Don't You, Forget About Me', 1989 UK No.1 single 'Belfast Child', plus over 20 other UK Top 40 singles).

1961: Neil Christian and the Crusaders, featuring a young Jimmy Page on guitar, played a concert at Holloway Women’s Prison in London, England. The inmates were all dressed in washed out yellow, green, blue and red faded floral print dresses and wore homemade mascara, using the charcoal from burnt matches.


Charlie Benante

1962: Charlie Benante, Anthrax, (1991 UK No.16 single 'Got The Time').Charles Lee Benante is an American musician best known as the drummer for thrash metal band Anthrax, as well as crossover thrash band Stormtroopers of Death. Alongside rhythm guitarist and band leader Scott Ian he has composed the majority of the music throughout Anthrax's discography.

1962: The Beatles recorded their first BBC radio session at the BBC Paris studio on Regent Street in London. They played 'Twist and Shout', 'Love Me Do' and 'P.S. I Love You', the tracks were aired on the BBC Light Program 'Talent Spot.'

1967: The 16-date UK package tour with Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Move, The Nice, The Outer Limits, The Eire Apparent and Amen Corner travelled to Belfast to appear for two shows at the Whitla Hall, Queens College. It was Jimi's 25th birthday and before the shows the guitarist was given a birthday cake by the promoters This was to be the only concert that The Jimi Hendrix Experience ever played in Ireland.

1967: The Beatles released the album Magical Mystery Tour in the U.S., and the single "Hello Goodbye"

1968: Steppenwolf's self-titled debut album is certified gold.

1969: During a North American tour The Rolling Stones played the first of four shows at Madison Square Garden, New York City. The group played to 55,000 fans over the four nights grossing over $100,000.The Rolling Stones did a show that was recorded and later released on the album Get Yer (sic) Ya-Ya's Out!" The Ike & Tina Turner Revue opened and during that performance, Janis Joplin joined Tina onstage for a duet.

1970: Black Sabbath, Cactus and Steel Mill, (featuring Bruce Springsteen) all appeared at the Sunshine In, Asbury Park in New Jersey. All three acts played two shows, tickets cost $5.00.

1970: George Harrison releases All Things Must Pass, his first solo album since the breakup of The Beatles. The first single, "My Sweet Lord," becomes the first ex-Beatle solo #1 in the UK and also in the US.


Killer

1971: Alice Cooper released the album "Killer".Killer is the fourth studio album by the Alice Cooper band. The album reached number 21 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and the two singles "Under My Wheels" and "Be My Lover" made the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

1971: Terry Corso, guitarist, Alien Ant Farm, (2001 Australian No.1 & UK No.3 single ‘Smooth Criminal’).

1971: Santana III owned the #1 spot on the Album chart for a third week.

1978: The Eagles released the single "Please Come Home for Christmas".

1979: The Eagles released the single "The Long Run".


Talk of the Devil

1982: Ozzy Osbourne released his double live album: Talk of the Devil. This memorable Ozzy Osbourne album was titled Talk of the Devil due to it being the more commonly expressed idiom there. In the USA and elsewhere, this release was titled:Speak Of The Devil. The band lineup for this album was: Ozzy Osbourne on vocals, Brad Gillis on guitar, Rudy Sarzo on bass and Tommy Aldridge on drums.

1984: Foreigner released their incredible single "I Want to Know What Love Is".

1986: Bon Jovi were at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'You Give Love A Bad Name', it peaked at No.14 in the UK. Released as the first single from the album Slippery When Wet, in 2009 it was named the 20th-greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1.


Live...In The Raw

1987: WASP released the LIVE album "Live...In The Raw" . Live...In the Raw is the first live album by W.A.S.P. (fourth album overall), released in 1987. This album can be seen as something of a breakwater between the 'old' W.A.S.P. of the first three albums and the more mature sound of the releases that would follow. It is also the album to feature "Harder Faster", which is about the PMRC declaring them "sexual perverts"."The Manimal" and "Harder Faster" were written specifically for this album and the studio song "Scream Until You Like It" was recorded for the movie Ghoulies II. The acoustic version of "Sleeping (In the Fire)" is also a studio recording.This would be the final release to feature drummer Steve Riley, who would leave the band shortly after the conclusion of the tour to join L.A. Guns.

1991: Freddie Mercury's funeral service was conducted by a Zoroastrian priest, for 35 of his close friends and family, with Elton John and the remaining members of Queen among those in attendance. Mercury was cremated at Kensal Green Cemetery, West London, England.

1993: Meat Loaf continued to serve leftovers as "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" was #1 for a fourth week.

1994: Rod Stewart and The Faces appeared at The Odeon, Lewisham, London, England. Paul and Linda McCartney both joined the band on stage for a few numbers.

1997: A memorial service was held for Michael Hutchence, lead singer of INXS, in Sydney, Australia.
