Rock and Metal History, November 28

1943: Randy Newman, singer, songwriter, Composer of 'Mama Told Me Not To Come', 'Simon Smith And The Amazing Dancing Bear', 1977 US No.2 single 'Short People.' Film soundtracks including 'Ragtime.' Once hailed as the greatest songwriter alive by Paul McCartney.


Matt Cameron

1962: Matt Cameron, drummer with Soundgarden, who joinedPearl Jam in 1998. At the age of thirteen, he and some friends played in a cover band called KISS, however, after a letter from the management of the rather better-known band Kiss, threatening the boys with legal action, they called it a day.

1968: On their first North American tour, Deep Purple played the first of four nights at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, California.

1970: Bob Dylan's 11th studio album New Morning was on the UK charts, his 6th UK No.1. The album featured 'If Not For You' which was recorded by bothGeorge Harrison (on his 1970 album All Things Must Pass), and became the title track for Olivia Newton-John's 1971 debut album.

Abraxas

1970: The great album Abraxas by Santana moved into the #1 position, abbreviating the four-week stay by Led Zeppelin III.

1970: The Who hits #12 in the United States with their hit See Me, Feel Me from their 1969 studio double album: Tommy. See Me, Feel Me was not a track in itself on the original Tommy album; rather this song is included as the latter half of the album’s closer: We’re not Gonna Take It.

1974: John Lennon made his last ever concert appearance when he joined Elton John on stage at Madison Square Gardens in New York City. Lennon performed three songs; 'Whatever Gets You Thru The Night', 'I Saw Her Standing There' and 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.'

1976: The Sex Pistols appeared on BBC TV's 'Nationwide' and ITV's 'London Weekend Show.'

1979: Iron Maiden signed with EMI Records. Earlier in the month they recorded two songs for the compilation Metal For Muthas released by the same label.


Autoamerican

1980: Blondie released their album Autoamerican, which featured their hit song, “Rapture.”

1981: Foreigner hits #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with Waiting For A Girl Like You. This power ballad is featured on the fourth studio album from Foreigner, aptly titled: 4.

1987: David Bowie played the second of four sold-out nights during his Glass Spider Tour in Australia and New Zealand at the Kooyong Stadium in Melbourne.

1987: REM had their first entry in the Top 10 on the US singles chart with ‘The One I Love.’

1987: Tunnel of Love by Bruce Springsteen was already on its way down after just six weeks with a peak of #3. The self-titled Whitesnake came in fourth followed by A Momentary Lapse of Reason by Pink Floyd and the new Def Leppard album Hysteria.


1989: Prince's song "Scandalous," from the Batman Soundtrack, was released.

1991: Nirvana recorded a performance for BBC TV music show Top Of The Pops in London. When asked to lip-sync 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' to a pre-recorded tape Kurt Cobain protested by singing an octave lower (he later confirmed he was imitating Morrissey from The Smiths), and attempted to eat his microphone at one point. He also changed some of the lyrics, exchanging the opening line "load up on guns, bring your friends," for "load up on drugs, kill your friends."


Jerry Edmonton

1993: Steppenwolf drummer Jerry Edmonton was killed in a car crash not far from his Santa Barbara, California home, he was 47. Steppenwolf had the 1969 US No.2 & UK No.30 single 'Born To Be Wild'

The Battle Of Los Angeles

1999: Rage Against The Machine were at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘The Battle Of Los Angeles’ the bands second US No.1.

2000: David Bowie was crowned the musician's musician. Bowie beat The Beatlesand alternative rockers Radiohead in a survey by the NME that asked hundreds of top rock and pop stars to name their biggest musical influence.

2004: Metallica played the last show on their 137-date ‘Madly in Anger with the World Tour’ at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. It became the fourth-highest grossing tour of 2004, reaping $60,500,000 in ticket sales.

2005: During Pearl Jam’s concert at the Gigantinho Gymnasium in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Ramones drummer Marky Ramone joined them onstage for a rendition of The Ramones’ “I Believe in Miracles”.

2011: Venom released the album “Fallen Angels” . Venom's music has helped shape the development of many thrash metal bands, specifically the "Big Four of Thrash".

2014: Cannibal Corpse perform a concert at Z7 Konzertfabrik, Pratteln, Switzerland. Cannibal Corpse are touring in support of their 13th studio album: A Skeletal Domain. This album was released in 2014 via Metal Blade Records.

2014: In This Moment perform a concert at Myth in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The band is on tour supporting their 5th studio album: Black Widow. This new album was released this month, via Atlantic Records. Black Widow debuted impressively, at #8 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, for the week ending December 6th.

2014: GWAR perform a concert at Tremont Music Hall, in Charlotte, North Carolina, on their Eternal Tour 2014. Corrosion Of Conformity and American Sharks are the supporting bands.


Rock or Bust

2014: Rock or Bust , the sixteenth studio album by Australian rock band AC/DC was released . Rock or Bust is the group's first album to feature rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, replacing founding member Malcolm Young, who had retired from the band in 2014 due to health concerns and died in 2017.

2020: AC/DC show they still have plenty of spark as their album Power Up surges to #1 in America.
