1946: Roy Wood (Move/Wizzard) is an English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He was particularly successful in the 1960s and 1970s as member and co-founder of the Move, Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard. As a songwriter, he contributed a number of hits to the repertoire of these bands. Altogether he had more than 20 singles in the UK Singles Chart under various guises, including three UK No. 1 hits.
1957: Born on this day, Porl Thompson, The Cure, (1989 US No.2 single ‘Love Song’, 1992 UK No.6 single 'Friday I'm In Love', plus over 20 other UK Top 40 singles).
1957: Elvis Presley's third movie, Jailhouse Rock, opens nationally. It had a premiere a few weeks earlier at the Memphis theater where Elvis was once an usher.
1968: The Who, Joe Cocker and The Grease Band, The Mindbenders and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown all appeared at The Walthamstow Granada Theatre, England.
1969: On second gig of their first US tour in three years, Rolling Stones beat Los Angeles concert gross record (held since 1966 by Beatles) when fans pay £108,000 to see the band play the Forum
1970: Jim Morrison of The Doors makes the spoken-word recordings which would later become the basis of the group's album An American Prayer.
1971: The untitled fourth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, was released by Atlantic Records. It was produced by guitarist Jimmy Page and recorded between December 1970 and February 1971, mostly in the country house Headley Grange. The album is notable for featuring "Stairway to Heaven", which has been described as the band's signature song.
1973: Bob Dylan records "Forever Young" and "On A Night Like This."
1974: Sheer Heart Attack is the third studio album by the British rock band Queen, released by EMI Records in the United Kingdom and by Elektra Records in the United States. Digressing from the progressive themes featured on their first two albums, the album featured more pop-centric and conventional rock tracks and marked a step towards the "classic" Queen sound. It was produced by the band and Roy Thomas Baker and launched Queen to mainstream popularity in the UK and throughout the world.
1976: Rush’s double live album All the World’s a Stage, reaches #40 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart in the United States.
1976: George Harrison releases The Best Of George Harrison.
1980: AC/DC hits #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with their hit You Shook Me All Night Long. This song is featured on their multi-million selling studio album Back In Black, released in 1980.
1980: Motorhead released the GREAT album "Ace of Spades" .Ace of Spades is the fourth studio album by British rock band Motörhead, released via Bronze Records. It is the band's most commercially successful album, peaking at number four on the UK Albums Chart and reaching gold status in the UK by March 1981. It was preceded by the release of the title track as a single on 27 October, which peaked in the UK Singles Chart at No. 15 in early November.
1980: KISS kicked off their 11 date Unmasked Tour of Australia and New Zealand laying two nights at Perth Entertainment Centre.
1986: Metallica performed their first live concert with Jason Newstead
1986: The Police had the top album in the U.K. with Every Breath You Take--the Singles.
1986: Triumph hits #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their hit Somebody’s Out There. This song is featured on the eighth studio album from Triumph, The Sport Of Kings, released in 1986.
1989: Iron Maiden released their live video (VHS) Maiden England. This classic live video of Iron Maiden was recorded in 1988, during their Seventh Tour Of A Seventh Tour. Of course, that historic tour had Iron Maiden promoting their Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son studio album.
1993: Live at Donington (released on VHS as Donington Live 1992) is a live album and video by the English heavy metal band Iron Maiden, documenting their second headlining appearance at the Monsters of Rock festival at Donington Park, a motorsport circuit located near Castle Donington. The concert took place on 22 August 1992 during the Fear of the Dark Tour in front of a crowd of almost 80,000.
1994: A&M Records releases Woodstock 1994, an album documenting the Woodstock '94 festival that took place in Saugerties, New York, three months earlier.
2005: Annihilator released the album “Schizo Deluxe”.It is the eleventh studio album by Canadian heavy metal band Annihilator, released by AFM Records.
2008: AC/DC started a two-week run at #1 on the US album chart with 'Black Ice' the bands fifteenth studio album and the second-best selling album of 2008. Black Ice went to #1 in 29 countries, including Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US.
